Black Friday is the day after Thanksgiving, 27th of November. It’s called Black Friday because of the immense large crowds on the streets. No parking places, long waiting lines, people fighting over the last articles in stock.

But do you know where this tradition came from? I like to say a few words about it because this day is connected to my hometown in the Netherlands.

In 1574 BC my hometown Leiden siege of the Spanish occupation ended. The city was desperate for food and the mayor offered to cut of his arm feed to the citizens. (as is the story) During 1609-1620 the Pilgrim Fathers, who fled from England to Leiden, got accustomed with the celebration of this liberation. Gratefulness for food was a very important part.

In 1620 the Pilgrim Fathers bound for America with the ship Mayflower. In 1621 they settled. Their crop failed. But with help of the Wampanoag Indians they could harvest that year. To celebrate their survival, they started Thanksgiving. Based on the liberation ceremony Leiden they knew.

Thanksgiving is always on the 4th Thursday in November. It’s all about food and gratitude. Most people get the day off  on Friday. Since the 1960ties people went shopping like crazy on this free Friday to get their Xmas presents. Since then it’s called Black Friday.

That’s some background. I thought it was fun to tell you because I don’t think any American knows this story. But you know now 😉

Black Friday means: SALES, DISCOUNTS, SHOPPING. I deliberately used capitals.

It is not just a great discount like 20% or 30%. The discounts can be huge! Up to 80%. Especially clothing can be very cheap.

A lot of Chinese shopping sites anticipate on this special occasion. And you know shipping takes time! That’s why a lot of discounts and sales takes the whole month of November. You need to buy now, to have it in 2 or 3 weeks.

  1. Nothing is made in the [us] anymore so instead of calling friday after thanksgiving black friday we should call it black china day

  2. Hellow there

I’m very please to write a few words to show my gratitude to have the chance to share a few experienced with others on this special day Black Friday. I think it is a very crowded day in every street shopping centers, especially in the United State, China and other countries.
We have that similar event in my home country Kiribati we called it a trade fair show day. My experienced during that special day the crowd are walk around in Town to get to the trade fair show center. What they did, they bushing each other to try to get what they want to buy or try to get to the front of the line and many more. At last most of them were exhausted and unable to buy what they really like.

I suggest, that shopping online is much more convenient than getting into the crowded shopping centers and try to get in the front line to get what you want.

    Thank you

  3. Hi Boris, I would always go for online in stead of those crowd shopping days. I hate to stay in line to wait. But my wife doesn’t….. Fortunately we don’t know black friday here.
